Not everyone is eligible for a boiler grant. The ECO3 Scheme that gives out the free boiler grants has an eligibility checker where you can use to see who is eligible, however, there are a few factors that will determine whether you are eligible for a boiler grant:
- Qualifying Benefits
- Eligibility
- Calculating Funding
1. Qualifying Benefits
The ECO3 scheme was set up by the British government to help low income households who cannot afford new boilers and to aid in reducing households’ carbon footprints. To be eligible for a boiler grant, you must meet at least one of the following qualifying benefits:
- Child Tax Credit
- Income-Related ESA
- Income-Based JSA
- Income Support
- Guarantee Pension Credit
- Working Tax Credits
- Universal Credit
- Disability Living Allowance
- Personal Independence Payment
- Attendance Allowance
- Carer’s Allowance
- Severe Disablement Allowance
- Industrial Injuries Disablement benefits
2. Eligibility
Homeowner Grant
The homeowner grant is available to those who simply own their home. This does not have to be for a set number of years, just as long as you own the house, and you can have a new boiler installed, loft insulation and/or external wall insulation fitted to keep your rented house sufficiently warm.
Private Tenants Grant
The private tenants grant is for tenants who are privately renting and believe that their home is not being efficiently heated by the boiler. With the consent of the landlord, just like with the homeowner grant, you can have a new boiler, loft insulation and/or external wall insulation can be fitted.
Landlord Grant
The tenant does not have to be the one who applies for the boiler grant. The landlord grant is for landlords who have tenants that reside in one of their rented properties and are on the qualifying benefits listed above.

Calculating Funding
You are not required to repay any of the money that the ECO3 scheme provides for your new boiler, whether you are a homeowner, private tenant or landlord. An assessment will be carried out to determine your lifetime saving score and this will depend on your property type, number of bedrooms and wall type. This data will then be used to check the eligibility of how much funding you are entitled to from the ECO3 scheme. Most properties will be eligible for the full grant, however, in some cases a contribution will have to be made by the homeowner.
