What is Loft Insulation?

Loft insulation is a barrier of material within your roof – placed on the floor joists or rafters – that reduces the amount of heat lost from your roof. This creates a warmer home in winter and a cooler home in summer.

The thicker your loft insulation is, the more effective it will be at stopping the heat from leaving your house.

Find out more about the roof/loft insulation process in this helpful video from Energy Saving Trust.

What Are the Benefits of Loft Insulation?

According to Energy Saving Trust, a quarter of heat is lost through the roof in an uninsulated home. Loft insulation will reduce heat loss and your heating bills. The best part? Loft Insulation can save you between £135 and £250 a year if you live in England, Scotland or Wales, and it effective for at least 40 years.

If you are topping up existing insulation, you can save between £230 and £395 per year.

Loft insulation also reduces carbon emissions. You can save up to 1400 kg of carbon dioxide if you live in a detached house, and 820kg if you live in a semi-detached. It is estimated that 19% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions come from warming up the places we live and work, with more than three-quarters of this coming from our homes – hence why insulation is so important.

Insulation can also help your home become more soundproof by reducing outside noise.

Suppliers across the UK are required to deliver ECO from 2020, but we at Towy Valley Heating are proud to have been involved with the ECO scheme since it began. Contact us to find out if more about the free heating measures we offer, and if you are eligible.
